Reaching the crater is straightforward once you know the shape of the journey: a train or coach along the coast, then a road vehicle up the Strada Provinciale Ercolano–Vesuvio to the trailhead at a thousand metres. From Naples
The Circumvesuviana line runs from Napoli Porta Nolana and Napoli Garibaldi along the coast, and Ercolano Scavi is the stop you want. From outside the station, shuttle buses climb the provincial road to the park entrance. It is the classic route and the cheapest. The Circumvesuviana is a working commuter line rather than a tourist service, so travel light, aim for a mid-morning train, and you will have a comfortable run.
The alternative from Naples is a direct coach or minibus that leaves from near Napoli Centrale, carries your park ticket with it, and drops you at the top. Several such services run daily. If you are travelling as a pair or more, the price difference against two train fares plus two shuttle fares narrows quickly.
Why Naples has the most departures
Operators bundle the timed ticket and the mountain road into a single booking, which is why more Mount Vesuvius tours leave from Naples than anywhere else. For the least friction at the lowest price that bundle is usually the answer — and it is why a bus-and-ticket trip costs barely more than entry alone.
From Herculaneum
Ercolano is the closest town to the gate and the departure point most people overlook. The shuttle stand sits a short walk from the Scavi station and from the entrance to the Herculaneum archaeological park. Doing both in one day is comfortable in a way that Pompeii plus Vesuvius never quite is — Herculaneum is a fraction of the size and takes about half the time to walk.
It is also the fallback several operators name in writing: when the crater is closed, Herculaneum is where the day goes instead.
From Pompeii
Transfers leave from Porta Marina Superiore, the main entrance to the excavations, roughly a four-minute walk from the Pompei Scavi station on the Circumvesuviana. The drive up takes around half an hour. This is the pairing most visitors picture when they imagine the trip — stand in the city the volcano buried, then stand on the volcano and look back down at it.
Plan it as a full day rather than an afternoon: two hours guided in Pompeii, two at the crater, and an hour or so of transfers between them. Trips built around that timing give both halves the room they deserve.
From Sorrento
Sorrento sits at the far end of the Circumvesuviana, so the guided full day is the route that works here. Coaches leave from Piazza Tasso and Piazza Angelina Lauro, carry the ticket, handle both halves of the itinerary and get you back in time for dinner — the standard choice from the Sorrentine peninsula, for good reason.
From Rome
A day trip from Rome is a twelve-hour round trip and a genuinely efficient way to take in both sites in one go. On most Rome departures the volcano is an upgrade chosen at checkout — a crater hike, or a geologist-led walk on the slopes — so tick the option you want as you book and the day comes together neatly.

Driving up is a pleasure in its own right — hairpins through old lava fields with the bay widening below you. The only thing to plan for is parking, which sits a little below the entrance.
- Buy the crater ticket firstThe park says this explicitly. Parking is worthless without a timed entry slot, and the slot is the thing that sells out.
- Then book parkingThe car parks along the provincial road are run by the town of Ercolano, separately from the park. Booking online in advance costs around €7 and saves hunting for a space.
- Ride the shuttle for the last stretchRoughly two kilometres from the car parks to the entrance, covered by a shuttle for a few euros per person. Well worth taking — save your legs for the crater.
- Give the last mile twenty minutesBetween the drive, the parking and the shuttle, a little slack before your slot means you arrive relaxed.
Driving up? Park lower down and ride the shuttle
The piazzale at the top is managed by the park and kept clear of private vehicles, so the car parks sit further down the provincial road and a shuttle covers the last stretch for a few euros. Book parking online, allow twenty minutes for the transfer, and stop for facilities in Ercolano on the way — there are none at the entrance itself.
